It is very important to write good resumes for skilled workers.
This is due to many reasons – the foremost being the fact that most construction resumes relying on relevant skills and expertise to get a job – as the education factor is less critical for the majority of construction positions.
Construction Professions and Hierarchy
There are many types of construction professionals; each performs his specific duty on a project.
This may include; laborer, carpenter, estimator, bricklayer, construction worker, heavy equipment operator, architect, drafter, foremen, electrician, construction supervisor, and alike.
They usually start their career at a junior level, which gives them enough insight to be able to climb up the hierarchy ladder eventually.
Construction workers prepare sites for work by mopping and brushing them or using tools and equipment to make them construction-ready.
They are instrumental in erecting structures by aligning and joining different components to make one large entity.
Construction workers are supervised by construction foremen who oversee their work to make sure that all work is performed within schedule, under budget, and in a correct manner.
Construction supervisors are expected to provide status updates to construction managers, and this is how the hierarchy works.
Construction Resume Writing Tips
Understandably, resumes for different positions in the construction arena need to have different content and format even though the essence is the same.
Once the contact information on a resume is written, you will need to mention your professional objective/summary and qualifications.
For example, for a construction worker, an objective statement might be “Seeking a Construction Worker position utilizing physical stamina and great attention to detail,” and qualifications may include “Exceptional knowledge of construction work in terms of using tools and equipment.”
For a construction foreman, you may need to include your supervisory experience in construction projects. For a managerial position, the ability to bring construction projects to fruition is something you will need to write.
After mentioning qualifications, write your relevant competencies and experiences in bullet statements in reverse chronological order.
Avoid saying everyday job duties – try to mention results which were produced by you. This section can be divided into two sub-sections; “Major Tasks” and “Key Accomplishments.”
Next comes your education and skills section. There will be much to write about your skills – so make sure that you specify your core skills under a heading marked as “special skills” or “construction skills.”
You can write many bullet statements here, such as; ability to use hand and power tools, proficiency in driving and operating forklifts and cranes, physical dexterity, time management skills, and the ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
