Teacher Resignation Letter: 3 Samples

Updated: June 2, 2023

Leaving a teaching job can be riddled with difficulties. You may not feel comfortable leaving a teaching position immediately owing to your sense of responsibility.

But, unfortunately, some circumstances leave you no choice but to resign. When you resign from your teaching job, it is recommended to leave as gracefully and efficiently as possible.

  1. Write your resignation carefully. You do not want to offend the employer, which can harm your chances of re-employment.
  2. You should give sufficient notice to the school’s management.
  3. Start your handing/taking process after submitting your resignation.

Ms. Selena Hendricks
Newark Junior School
63 Hudson Avenue
Newark, NJ 05902

Dear Ms. Hendricks:

Please accept this letter as formal resignation from my position as a Teacher for Newark Junior School with immediate effect. Today, June 2, will be my last working day. I regret any inconvenience, but I have no choice.

I am not feeling well for some months, and my poor health has now started to affect my work. Therefore, I am not able to create workable lesson plans or impart lessons as I should be. The appointment I had with my doctor yesterday forced me to come up with this decision.

I understand that I need to provide one week’s notice of my intent to leave, and will not be eligible for any end-of-term benefits. Unfortunately, I will not be able to continue, owing to my deteriorating health condition. I am already in touch with the accounts office to arrange for my final salary.

I apologize for not being able to train my replacement but if things do not fall into place, please call me at (000) 457-7845, and I will come in and help out as often as my health permits. I would like to thank you for giving me the chance to obtain this fantastic teaching experience.

Sincere regards,

Mr. Leroy Rich
Nashville High School
625 Franklin Street
New York, NY 08262

Dear Mr. Rich:

I am writing to inform you about my decision to resign from my position as a Math Teacher at Nashville High School. Please consider this letter a formal 2 weeks’ notice. That is to say, June 16, 2023, will be my last working day here.

In spite of the fact that I enjoyed my job at Nashville High School immensely, I cannot continue at this point due to my higher studies. Recently, I got admission to Boston University’s postgraduate program and will need to move to Massachusetts by the end of June.

Had I had another choice, I would not have left – but this opportunity is a dream come true. I must say that I took pleasure in every moment that I spent at Nashville High School and will miss my students and coworkers very much.

Thank you very much for the opportunities for professional development that you have provided me throughout my tenure at Nashville High School. I still want to be associated with the school and will keep in touch throughout my time at the university. I wish the entire staff every success in their future endeavors.

Truly yours,

Final Thought

Resigning from a teaching job can be painful because of your emotional attachment to the institution and students.

On the other hand, at some stage in your career, you have to resign from your current teaching position due to domestic affairs, study, or a better opportunity.

When resigning from a teaching position, be sure to follow your school district’s policies and procedures.

Give adequate notice; the typical notice period for teaching jobs is 2 to 4 weeks. You may see your school’s policies to check the resignation notice period.

Your letter is supposed to be brief and factual.
