It is standard policy in some schools to ask a teacher who has just resigned to inform parents as well.
They may be required to contact her parents through letters to inform them that they will no longer be their children’s teacher – and to introduce a replacement.
The latter may only be done if the school directs explicitly, but it is usually quite standard practice.
So what goes in a resignation letter from a teacher in such a case?
While you do not really give notice to parents, it is important to provide information on a timeline during which you will be at the school, so that parents can speak to you. This information can come after you are done writing the niceties.
Remember that any letter that you write to parents must be written carefully and professionally.
While putting in your feelings is not prohibited, it is a good idea to keep yourself emotionally detached.
If you are writing to each parent separately, you might want to put in a few good words regarding their child’s performance and provide suggestions for students’ academic improvement.
The following is a sample teacher resignation letter to parents, from which you can take ideas.
Teacher Resignation Letter to Parents
August 31, 2022
It is with deep sadness that I am writing this letter to inform you of my decision to resign as a Grade 6 Math Teacher for Phillips Cordon Elementary School. I have worked as an integral part of this school for ten years, and leaving now seems almost unreal.
As I reach one decade of teaching Mathematics, I realized that I should pause before I reach the burnout stage. While it was not an easy decision for me to make, it was a necessary one. I cannot single out one student from my class who was not a pleasure to teach. Your children were a joy to work with – I must admit I learned from them at least as much as they learned from me.
Mrs. Jemima Carson will be replacing me – I have already introduced her to my students, and they seem to have taken an instant liking to her. She is an experienced math teacher, and I am positive that your children will be in good hands. During the next two weeks, Mrs. Carson will attend class alongside me so that I can slowly transfer my work to her.
If you have any questions that you need to ask me, please contact the school office at (000) 141-7441 to set up an appointment.
