Recommendation Letter for a Substitute Teacher

Updated: March 1, 2023

As a formal endorsement of a job seeker’s potential, a Substitute Teacher recommendation letter provides credence to their abilities to perform the job.

Recommendation letters written for substitute teaching positions are usually done by a principal and sometimes by the lead teacher that the substitute teacher has been working in place.

The content of a recommendation letter needs to be simple.

While you may have to follow some basic rules (such as opening and introduction), you can write your thoughts about how the substitute teacher contributed positively to the school.

In a Substitute Teacher recommendation letter, you must paint an overall picture of the substitute teacher. It will include her characteristics, performance, experience, strengths and capabilities, and professional promise.

While you do not have to cover all of these (in many instances, you may not be able to anyway), take at least a few into consideration when writing a recommendation letter.

You can begin by explaining what relationship you have with the substitute teacher and why this letter is being written.

Once this is out of the way, you can provide information on how she has worked and what abilities make her suitable for another position.

Here is a great example to get ideas from:

To Whom It May Concern

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Gale Reynolds. She worked as a Substitute Teacher for Anderson High School for five years between 2018 and 2023. As her immediate supervisor, I have had the good fortune to see students respond positively to her; an advantage that most substitute teachers, unfortunately, do not have.

Gale has always been extremely motivated. Whether she was assigned to a language or a recreational class, she has shown her enthusiasm for her work and developed her students at every point. In my observation, one of her main strengths has been her ability to motivate students.

She made excellent lesson plans and imparted them perfectly. Also, she is proficient in recognizing when a student needs special attention, grabs the opportunity with both hands, and ends up making a difference.

I would like to endorse the fact that Gale is dependable and is in tune with the needs of students. I highly recommend her for a teaching position and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Geraldine Harold
