Many of us have come across instances when another position within the same company holds interest for us. If there are no rules against applying for a job in another department (or within the department), the best way to go about it is to write a letter of interest.
An employer will not necessarily discourage an employee to apply for a job within the company as there are many pros to this – hiring people from within a company means that there will be little or no training costs as the employee will be familiar with the company.
The type of job that you want is actually up to you – you may want to climb the ladder and apply for a higher post or move sideways to a similar one in another department. In either case, you will need to write a letter of interest to express your will to move from your current position. Here is how you can do this.

Dear Ms. Smith:
This is with reference to the mass email that was issued by the Human Resource Department of Cox Communications in reference to the open position for a Communications Manager. The enclosed resume outlines an extensive record of achievements and their impact on Cox Communications through my role as a Communications Officer, spanning the previous three years.
As you will note from the enclosed resume, I have played a major role in obtaining grants for the Hubara Bustard project which was a roaring success for Cox Communications. I have dealt with a wide spectrum of individuals during this project and subsequent ones which makes me eloquent when it comes to the diverse projects that the company is so popular for. I am completely familiar with the workings of not only the communications and marketing departments of Cox Communications but also with finance and conservation departments as I have extensively worked with all of them. This familiarity will save you the time and cost of training a new person for this position.
Cox Communications is now bidding for the Mangroves project –I am one of the key members of the team that has the responsibility of laying the groundwork – and I believe that I will have more to contribute in a position of higher authority.
To discuss this in detail, I would like to meet with you personally. I will call your office on Wednesday to determine if you have time for a meeting. If you need to reach me, please contact me at my extension 222. Thank you very much for your consideration.
