Which Example Fits You?
| Your situation | Best example | What to highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Caring for the sickest patients | ICU travel nurse | Patient ratio, drips, ventilators and precepting |
| Working fast under pressure | Emergency room travel nurse | Visits a day, triage, codes and relief charge |
| Working on general floors | Med-surg and telemetry travel nurse | Patient load, rhythms, medication safety and teaching |
| Working in surgery | Operating room travel nurse | Cases a day, counts and on-time starts |
What Does a Travel Nurse Do?
A travel nurse is a registered nurse who fills short-term staffing needs, often in 13-week assignments, through a staffing agency. You still assess patients, give medications, coordinate care and teach families, but you do it on a new unit with new teammates and a new charting system, so employers look for quick, safe starts. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says some registered nurses travel frequently.
| Fact | BLS figure (registered nurses) |
|---|---|
| Median pay (May 2025) | $97,550 a year ($46.90 an hour) |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor’s degree |
| License | State-issued license and a qualifying exam |
| Jobs in 2025 | 3,465,400 |
| Job outlook, 2025 to 2035 | Grows 6% (194,700 jobs) |
| Openings each year | About 180,800 |
These figures cover all registered nurses, not only travel nurses, and the BLS does not publish travel pay. For travel pay ranges, see our travel nurse salary guide.
How to Write Each Section
| Section | What to put |
|---|---|
| Header | Name with credentials, city and state, phone, email |
| Summary | Years, specialty, assignments and 2 or 3 strengths |
| Selected Achievements | 3 proven results with numbers |
| Experience | Agency, dates, assignments, states, ratios and results |
| Education | Degree, school and year |
| Certifications | RN license, multistate status, life support and specialty credentials |
| Skills | Clinical and charting skills that match the posting |
How to List Travel Assignments
Most nurses list the agency as one employer with a full date range, then use bullets to show the number of assignments, states and units. Add a line for each assignment only when a recruiter asks for detail.
| Detail | Example |
|---|---|
| Agency and dates | Travel Registered Nurse, Harborlight Nurse Staffing | 2021 to present |
| Assignment count | Completed 9 thirteen-week assignments in 7 states |
| Unit and ratio | Cared for 4 patients at a time in a 28-bed telemetry unit |
| Facility type | Level II trauma center, community hospital or surgical center |
| Results | Extended 3 contracts at the request of unit managers |
| Teaching | Precepted 5 new hires and fellow travelers |
Multistate License and the Nurse Licensure Compact
Show your license clearly, because recruiters check it first. The Nurse Licensure Compact says a multistate license lets a nurse practice in all compact states, and a nurse with a multistate license on a temporary assignment in another compact state does not need that state’s license. To qualify, the nurse needs a compact state as their primary state of residence and must meet the compact’s uniform requirements. For a state outside the compact, you apply for that state’s license separately.
Write your license the way it appears on your records, for example “Registered Nurse (RN), multistate license.” List your license number only when an application asks for it, and never on a public resume.
Travel Nurse Resume Bullet Examples
Start each bullet with an action verb and show a number. These examples are fictional, so replace them with your own true details.
| Area | Example bullet |
|---|---|
| Assignments | Completed 8 thirteen-week ICU assignments in 6 states |
| Patient care | Cared for 2 critically ill patients per shift, including ventilated patients |
| Speed | Started full patient assignments by the third shift on every new unit |
| Safety | Gave medications with 100% barcode scanning compliance |
| Teamwork | Served as relief charge nurse on about 20 shifts |
| Teaching | Taught discharge plans to about 30 patients and families a week |
Travel Nurse Resume Keywords by Specialty
| Specialty | Keywords to use if they are true |
|---|---|
| ICU | Ventilator care, drip titration, hemodynamic monitoring, continuous dialysis |
| Emergency room | Triage, trauma, stroke response, ESI, relief charge |
| Med-surg and telemetry | Medication safety, telemetry, wound care, discharge teaching |
| Operating room | Circulating, scrubbing, surgical safety checklist, counts |
Use only keywords that describe work you really do. Match the words in the job posting where they are true.
One Page or Two?
One page is enough for most travel nurses. Nurses with many assignments and certifications may use two pages if every line supports the job. Put the strongest, most relevant items first and group older assignments into one line.
Travel Nurse Resume Checklist
Tick each item as you finish. It also covers common mistakes, such as vague bullets, listing credentials you do not hold and sharing patient information. You are ready to apply when the counter reaches 10.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a travel nurse resume include?
Include contact information, a short summary, three selected achievements, work experience with numbers, education, certifications and skills. Name your specialty, your patient ratio, the types of units you have worked on and how many assignments you have finished.
How do I list multiple travel assignments on a resume?
Most nurses list the staffing agency as one employer with the full date range, then use bullets to show the number of assignments, states and units. If a recruiter asks for detail, add a separate line for each assignment with the facility type, unit, city, state and dates. Keep the most recent and most relevant assignments first.
How long should a travel nurse resume be?
One page is enough for most travel nurses. Two pages can work if you have many assignments and certifications, as long as every line supports the job and the strongest items come first.
What licenses and certifications should I list?
List your RN license, whether it is a multistate license, and your life support and specialty credentials, such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC or CCRN. List only what you hold, and make sure names and expiration dates match your records.
What is the Nurse Licensure Compact and why does it matter?
The Nurse Licensure Compact lets a nurse with a multistate license practice in all compact states. According to the compact, a nurse needs a compact state as their primary state of residence and must meet its uniform requirements. A nurse with a multistate license on a temporary assignment in another compact state does not need that state’s license. For a state outside the compact, you apply for that state’s license separately.
How much experience do I need to be a travel nurse?
Agencies and hospitals set their own requirements, and they differ by specialty and facility. Read each posting for the years of experience in your specialty, and show your years and unit type in your summary.
What skills should I list on a travel nurse resume?
Patient assessment, medication administration, IV therapy, electronic charting in Epic and Cerner, rapid unit onboarding, care coordination, patient and family education, and specialty skills such as ventilator care, telemetry monitoring or triage. List only what you can really do.
What numbers can I use on a travel nurse resume?
Assignments completed, states worked, patient ratio, bed count or daily visits, contracts extended, nurses you precepted and shifts as relief charge nurse. Use only numbers you can explain in an interview.
Should I put my pay or housing needs on my resume?
No. Keep pay, housing and start dates for your conversation with the recruiter. Use the resume to show your skills and results. For pay ranges, see our travel nurse salary guide.
How much do registered nurses earn and what is the job outlook?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a May 2025 median pay of $97,550 a year, or $46.90 an hour, for registered nurses. It projects employment to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 180,800 openings a year. Those figures cover all registered nurses, not just travelers, and projections can change.
Conclusion
A good travel nurse resume is clear, honest and easy to scan. Show your specialty, your ratios, your assignments and the results that made managers extend your contract. Tailor each application, then use the builder above to write yours.
