Cover letters are not what they used to be. Better or worse now? That is probably relative. Cover letters of the yore were straightforward and simple, providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of an applicant’s abilities. Now they are more complicated in the sense that there is a lot of flowery language to woo the reader. Earlier, cover letters could be a reiteration of a corresponding resume. Now, a reiteration is considered a great job application sin.
Situations have changed and with them, so have the needs of employers. They do not want simplicity – except maybe in language – as simple things often don’t make an impact. And a good impression is needed nowadays to separate the would-be cover letters from the could-be ones. By good impression, we mean that one needs to come across as someone who cannot just do the job but is also a star in every other manner, including handling problems when they are most difficult to handle. While you cannot write this in your cover letter, you need to be able to show that you are indeed this capable. See what we mean by complications?
