Overview

A veterinary doctor cannot run a practice on his or her own. It is essential to hire support staff to handle reception, administrative and animal support duties so that each part of the practice can be run in a smooth way.

A veterinary receptionist is hired primarily to handle most of these duties. Opening and closing the practice, manning the reception, taking telephone calls, greeting patients and assisting in clinical procedures is all in a day’s work for receptionists working at a veterinary practice.

Job Requirements

There aren’t any specific qualifications required to work as a veterinary receptionist, but you must be able to demonstrate empathy with animals/pets and handle them in distressful situations. An organized mind and some knowledge of handling clinical procedures also come in handy when working in this position.

Typically, veterinary receptionists schedule appointments, educate pet owners about treatments and clinical or surgical procedures and assist the veterinary doctor with various tasks.

• Greet pet owners as they arrive at the facility
• Provide information on clinical and surgical procedures and treatments
• Educate pet owners about pet care regimens
• Schedule appointments for patients and ensure that they are in sync with veterinary doctor’s calendar
• Perform preliminary checks on pets and make notes for the doctor’s benefit
• Prepare examination rooms and make sure that all equipment and supplies are available
• Assist in restraining and calming down animals during examination
• Provide input and support during surgical procedures
