Sick Day Email Sample (5 Writing Tips)

Updated on: October 17, 2021

If you will not be able to go to work due to some kind of illness, it is essential to let your employer know on time.

A sick day email is a simple way of letting your boss and colleagues know that you will not be coming and why you have decided to take the day off.

How to Write a Sick Day Email?
  1. You must be very clear about your reason – if you have an illness that requires you to stay off from work for more than a day, mention it in your email.
  2. If possible, attach a scanned copy of a doctor’s note with the email to provide proof of your claim.
  3. Since you are writing an email while you are not feeling too good, keep it short.
  4. Make sure that you add all the information that your supervisor will need.
  5. Suggest how you intend to make up for a lost time at work and if you plan to do part of your work at home.

Re: Sick Leave

Dear Ms. Nicola:

I am writing to inform you that I will not be able to come to work today as I am feeling unwell since I came back yesterday.

In fact, I had had a high fever and a heavy head at work all day yesterday. Additionally, a quick trip to the ER last night confirmed that I had contracted the “bug.”

The ER doctor suggested that I take at least two days off from work. That is because I am contagious and will risk infection to my coworkers.

Rest assured that I will manage my work from home during my leave. Also, I will be in continuous contact with my clients through email and phone.

Please find the doctor’s note attached to this email. I would appreciate it if you could forward this email to HR so that they can formally process my leave. As of yesterday, I had six sick leaves left for the rest of the year, so I am assuming it is not a problem to take two days off.

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
