Lifeguard Job Description

Lifeguards create a safe environment where people can enjoy swimming, surfing, and boating without having to fear to drown or hurt.

Lifeguards typically keep an eye on people indulging in recreational activities on a pool, lake, water-park or the beach.

In the event of a mishap, they are responsible for performing lifesaving activities such as resuscitation and first aid. Some lifeguards also provide swimming training to novices and children.

On any typical workday, lifeguards take a headcount of people swimming and ensure that they are kept safe by calling out to them in case they venture too far or have been in the water for too long. The need to be vigilant at all times is high in this position.

Sample Job Description and Duties for Lifeguard Resume

1. Maintain continuous surveillance of people in swimming pools, lakes, and oceans.

2. Perform appropriate headcount of people involved in a watersport on an hourly basis.

3. Call out warnings to people who may have ventured too far or are in imminent danger.

4. Provide safety information to people before they indulge in a water sport.

5. Supervise swimmers while ensuring that they are swimming within the safety protocols.

6. Proactively identify hazards or potential hazards and take measures to prevent accidents.

7. Control and report unruly behavior and evict individuals not adhering to behavior protocols.

8. Ensure that water sports such as beach volleyball and surfing are done within the parameters of set rules and regulations.

9. Immediately provide rescue in the event of drowning or swimming incidents.

10. Perform first aid and CPR according to the demands of adverse situations.

11. Perform pool chemical checks in order to ensure safety and hygiene.

12. Maintain accurate records of pool use and chemical levels.

13. Teach swimming techniques and safety education to the new swimmers.

14. Check the security of rescue tubes and buoys while performing needed maintenance.

15. Store all equipment safely and keep any lost items in a safe place.

Lifeguard Job Requirements

In order to obtain employment as a lifeguard, one has to be an excellent swimmer along with possessing certification in lifesaving particularly the Red Cross Advanced Lifesaving Certificate.

Specific training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is also one of the prerequisites for this position.
