1. In what department have you worked as a medical driver?
As a medical driver, I have worked in both emergency and non-emergency departments. And I am well-versed in handling both with equal responsibility.
2. What do you think a medical driver needs in terms of skills?
Apart from being able to drive medical units such as vans and transits, it is important for medical drivers to be exceptionally talented at handling sensitive information such as medical documents and lab samples, and have it in them to value human life.
3. What are some of the main duties that you have performed in the role of a medical driver?
As a medical driver, I have been responsible for driving medical vans from one place to another, to transport patients, documents, and lab specimens. Making sure that timelines are adhered to, and ensuring the physical safety of all aboard is also an area that I am responsible for in this role. Ensuring that assigned vehicles are checked at the beginning of each shift to make sure that they are in good working order, and performing general and preventative maintenance on them have also been part of my work as a medical driver.
4. What do you feel is the most difficult part of working as a medical doctor?
I would probably call driving a medical unit challenging when there’s an emergency situation. However, this goes with the territory.
5. How do you handle stress when you are driving an emergency vehicle?
The stress of timelines and traffic issues is s horror at times, especially when there’s an emergency on board. But I am attuned to this now and focus on getting the patient to the hospital as soon as possible.
6. On a scale of one to ten (one being the lowest), where do you rate your skills as a medical driver?
I would give myself a realistic 8. I am good at what I do, but I am also aware of the fact that there is always room to learn more.
