A personal carer or personal caregiver is an individual who provides a wide range of services to people who may have trouble handling things due to their ages or physical or mental conditions. 

They work with adults, children, and the geriatric population depending on their specific positions and assignments.

In addition, they ensure that their wards are given the best possible personal services including assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and eating.

Mostly, personal carers work in people’s homes, but dedicated rehabilitation or care facilities may employ some.

It is the job of a personal carer to ensure that his or her wards are properly looked after and to make their physical and emotional well-being a priority.

A personal carer takes care of residents and clients. They need to possess compassionate nature and should be able to enjoy looking after the elderly and frail with dedication.

Personal Carer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage assigned patients/wards in conversation to gauge their personalities and individual likes and dislikes.
  • Thoroughly read and understand care plans developed by doctors or nursing professionals to determine courses of action on a daily basis.
  • Assist patients with their personal needs including toileting, bathing, grooming, and washing while maintaining their dignity and self-respect.
  • Enable mobility by pushing wheelchairs or assisting with walking and provide help by checking and properly placing specialist equipment.
  • Plan menus and recipes according to patients’ health statuses and ensure that the kitchen staff prepares their food accordingly.
  • Provide help to patients in partaking of their meals and record intake of water and food on a daily basis.
