The quest for the perfect cover letter will end up in you going through hundreds of cover letters – some very good ones and some not-so-great ones.
How do you tell the difference?
The difference is quite obvious, however, it does become a bit difficult to see when we are looking at each piece of writing objectively.
Be a little stingy and self-centered here. A good cover letter will be one that suits your needs perfectly. And your needs can be deciphered from what the employer wants you to be – read the employer’s requirements in the job advertisement.
This way, you will be able to distinguish the cover letter, the format of which you can use to write your own. Wait just a minute. Are you thinking of copying the content? Nope! Bad idea.
If you have found the sample on the Internet and copied it almost word for word, you will be deemed a cheater.
Apart from using application tracking systems, hiring managers are notorious for using plagiarism checkers to determine if a candidate has copied the content from somewhere.
Technology can be your best friend or worst enemy, depending on how you use it. Act wisely. Do not copy/paste any samples from the internet.
Take ideas only and write the letter in your own words. Here is a sample to help you write one:
