Updated on: May 30, 2023

There are many reasons to write a resignation letter and request a shorter notice period. Maybe you have to move to another city.

Or you are too unwell to work.

Typically, the notice period for leaving a job is 2 weeks. Some organizations may want you to give a 30-day notice as well.

In circumstances such as these, one does get a bit worried especially when one needs to leave immediately or almost immediately.

Many employers will not understand why you want to leave immediately.

But if you provide the right reason, and put your reason in the right words, it won’t be such a problem.

What reasons could warrant an immediate resignation or one with short notice?

An illness or an emergency is usually the cause.

Let us help you write a resignation letter where you request a short notice period:

Resignation Letter with Request to Reduce Notice Period

May 30, 2023

Mr. William Rice
Human Resources Manager
The Card Company
994 North Road
Norman, OK 42032

Dear Mr. Rice:

I have worked for The Card Company for such a long time that it is almost my second home now. It is painful to pen down my resignation letter at this point, but I am afraid that I do not have a choice.

For the last 3 months, I had been noticing that my work efficiency was going down, owing to the way that I had been feeling. After a few trips to the doctor, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, which makes it difficult for me to move around.

Constant pain in my joints is a challenge for me. Since I have to work on my feet most of the day, I am unable to meet the demands of this job. In fact, I am not meeting my deadlines.

In view of this situation, I request you to release me from my position as soon as possible. I understand that the notice period is 30 days. However, it would be impossible for me to work for that long, as I have been advised of bed rest by my doctor. Of course, I want to tie some loose ends in my work, for which I can come in for two weeks.

I would appreciate it if you would look into my request immediately. It is a sad day for me, as I will not only miss my work but also the lovely people with whom I’ve been working for such a long time.

Sincerely,

Kevin Ross
