What once was considered a boring job is now looked at as one that exposes people to the world of knowledge.

 

A library assistant is responsible for assisting librarians in ensuring that the day-to-day tasks of a library are completed so that the library keeps running smoothly.

Position Overview

The major job of a library assistant is to assist library patrons in looking for information.

Initially, library assistants would help patrons look for books and news items only – nowadays, they work with technology to find resources for library patrons.

Another important duty that library assistants perform is the registration of new patrons.

 

They take information from people intending to become members of a library, key in the information in library databases and generate library cards for them.

It is also the duty of a library assistant to check patrons’ library cards when they enter to make sure that there is no unauthorized use of library services.

A library assistant also issues books and sorts returned books. In addition to this, they work with other libraries to find items that patrons need and conduct book clubs. Job duties statements of a library assistant include:

• Open and close libraries at designated hours

• Greet library patrons as they enter and ask them how they would like to be assisted

• Determine what patrons are looking for in terms of books, news items or electronic information by conferring with them

• Perform research work to look for information or books that patrons have asked for

• Assist patrons in locating books, periodicals and journals in designated aisles

• Provide title suggestions in case requested titles are unavailable

• Give information to library patrons regarding the type of information located in each aisle

• Assist patrons in locating online information by providing them information on use of computers and online libraries

• Provide a range of circulation services such as library registration and transactions

• Record number and title of books that patrons are borrowing and provide return dates

• Make telephone calls to patrons who have not returned books on time or send emails requesting return

• Catalogue books properly and edit catalogue records periodically

• Place returned books in their designated shelves

• Repair or replace torn books and other library resources

• Answer routine inquiries over the telephone, through emails and in person

• Liaison with other libraries to procure books or information that patrons may be looking for

• Organize and lead reading clubs within the library premises
