Why did you choose to work as a campus monitor?

Very early on in my career in an administrative capacity in a school, I realized that my true calling was where student interaction was possible. Since then, I have worked in a campus monitor position, and have enjoyed every moment.

What duties have you performed in the role of a campus monitor?

I have been performing a wide range of duties including:

• Overseeing lunchroom activities to ensure that all is in order.
• Providing students with assistance in lunchroom queue management.
• Handling tray stacking activities, and overflow assistance.
• Ensuring that students were kept safe and secure during recess times.
• Reporting observations and incidents relating to students, such as accidents, fights, and inappropriate behavior.
• Responding to emergency situations such as accidents and injuries.

In your opinion, what skills does one need in order to successfully work as a campus monitor?

Working as a campus monitor comes with a lot of responsibility. One has to be aware of one’s surroundings at all times. And it is important to ensure that safety practices are administered properly. Furthermore, it is imperative for people working in this position to be vigilant at all times. Additionally, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important in this work.

What do you think should be most important to look out for when working as a campus monitor?

I believe that the safety of students should be paramount when working as a campus monitor. And this is the area that I focus on most.

What has been the most difficult situation that you have had to deal with?

I was once faced with a problem that was quite difficult to handle because it involved a student and a teacher. Both got into a fist fight when the student did not comply with the teacher’s orders. This happened in the grounds, and it was almost impossible to break it up before someone was hurt. But I managed to separate the two and bring the incident to the notice of the principal immediately. It was quite a harrowing experience when I realized that the safety of two people was at risk.

What is the one thing that you might do differently in your career if given a chance?

I am perfectly comfortable and satisfied with the way I have led my career, and wouldn’t change a thing!
