Position Overview

Field engineers are hired in many capacities, depending on what the demands of a specific project is. You can be hired as a bridge engineer, civil engineer, construction engineer, geomatics engineer or surveying engineer, depending on what needs to be done, and what the company hiring you requires. Basically, it is the job of a field engineer to make sure that all logistics are handled properly at a job site.

Typically, field engineers plan, design and develop projects for construction of buildings, oil well works and energy projects. These individuals are required to be physically dexterous as they have to battle harsh weather conditions on a regular basis, and may even be expected to live onsite for many days at a time. Since field engineers work primarily with clients and other members of the engineering team, it is imperative for them to possess exceptional communication skills. Additionally, it is important for field engineers to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is the basic requirement of any company hoping to hire a field engineer in any capacity. • Confer with clients to determine their specific project requirements and ensure that the project focus is properly aligned

• Engage in site layout, cost estimating, construction planning and materials procurement activities

• Provide insight into the design of temporary structures, formwork and falsework designs in coordination with established plans

• Perform quantity tracking and cost coding for purposes of productivity analysis and cost forecasting

• Provide timely and high-quality solutions to clients in regard to network service requirements and system installations

• Engage and coordinate the work of third party vendors in a bid to resolve open inquiries

• Handle system configuration, setup and testing work, ensuring minimum or reduced system downtime

• Present job design proposals, specifications and procedures to clients onsite, and obtain their approvals

• Oversee quality assurance and successful completion of projects, by following set timelines

• Monitor and record job progress details to ensure that all assigned work to contractors is performed in a timely manner

• Reconcile future worksites to ensure a smooth transition to other work locations

• Create and maintain effective liaison with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of supplies and equipment to the site
