A church custodian does most of the work that any custodian or janitor does in any other capacity.

Position Requirements
Typically, a high school diploma or a GED equivalent is sufficient to work as a church custodian. Since most of your work will be physical, it is important for you to be physically dexterous and agile.
You will also need to possess great insight into using chemicals safely when sanitizing surfaces and other areas such as pews and alters. Also, it is imperative for someone working at this position to make sure that event support is provided properly, as churches are quite often venues for weddings, funerals, baptisms, and christenings.

• Clean surfaces such as floors by sweeping and mopping them in accordance with established standards.
• Dust church furniture such as pews, tables, chairs and banisters, and ensure that they are polished on a regular basis.
• Wash bathrooms and restrooms by making safe use of chemicals and sanitizing liquids.
• Assist lawn maintenance staff by picking up raked leaves, and ensuring that all trash is properly disposed of.
• Collect garbage from trash cans from within the church building, and ensure that proper disposal is carried out.
• Clean fixtures such as lights, bulbs, and tubes, and ensure that any repairing needs are fulfilled.
• Communicate complex repairing needs to the church management, to ensure that they are professionally handled.
• Oversee the security of the church building, identifying any security breaches or problems in a prompt manner.
• Create and maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, and communicate low stock situations to the church management.
• Ascertain that all tools and supplies used in cleaning, managing and sanitization processes are adequately cleaned and put away at the end of the shift.
• Provide additional assistance at church events such as at weddings, funerals, baptisms, christenings, and holiday functions.
