In an interview for the position of computer operator, you will be tested on your knowledge of operating different types of computing environments and software.

Actual questions will depend on the kind of company that you are being interviewed for and the kind of work they expect you to do.

However, many general questions will be asked as well, so you need to be prepared for that.

1. Why do you want to work for us?

It will be an honor for me to be a part of the Maxell team plus I strongly believe that this is the appropriate platform where my innovative ideas and unique approaches for software maintenance and deployment can be put to effective use of the firm.

2. What makes you a good fit for a computer operator position at our company?

I have six years of experience handling mainframe and networking systems. My knowledge of all popular Microsoft products is above par. I can handle office equipment such as printers and scanners to make sure that there is minimum downtime.

On a personal level, I possess excellent critical thinking skills, which I believe are very important for people working as computer operators.

3. What are the main responsibilities of a computer operator?

A computer operator is primarily responsible for monitoring batch cycles and customer systems by using system commands, maintaining a customer database, and sustaining an integrated networking system.

They are also responsible for troubleshooting software and hardware issues related to PCs.

4. What are the two personality traits that are must for a computer operator?

I believe teamwork and communication skills are must-haves for any computer operator.

System maintenance is more effective when the computer operators work in collaboration and effective communication skills are also needed to ensure proper and complete sharing of information regarding system issues.

5. Which operating systems are you familiar with?

I am familiar with Linux, DOS, Windows, and Macintosh.

6. Tell me about your technical competencies?

My technical expertise includes interface maintenance, system troubleshooting, C++, Java, HTML, new software launch and deployment, SQL, networking, debugging, and AS400 i-series.

7. Share an experience where you handled a rather tricky situation?

It so happened last summer that 3 of our technical support members were not available, only a relatively junior colleague and I was on duty. The traffic flow unexpectedly exceeded, and the whole networking system crashed.

There was a major promotional event coming up in two days. It was challenging to re-network 50 plus systems manually, but with persistence and deliberation together, we accomplished the task, and all systems were functional within 8 hours of the crash down.

8. How do you rate your skills when it comes to communicating something technical to a non-technical audience?

I would say 10 out of 10 since I was famous for communicating steps to perform over the phone to non-technical customers for troubleshooting PC issues at my previous workplace.

I understand that the customers who call in for troubleshooting are usually panicky and I am good at calming them down first and then translating technical instructions into layman language to facilitate them.

9. What is the first thing that you will do when you realize that the computer you are working on has halted and may be subjected to a crash?

My first instinct would be to save the data. Since any information on the computer is considered a priority, I will rush to take a backup before I perform troubleshooting activities.

10. Would you block an unsavory site that you know an employee is repeatedly visiting? Or would you take other measures?

I believe that blocking sites does not resolve issues like this. I will point out to the employee in question, that his web-surfing habits do not conform to the company’s policies and ask him to refrain from visiting such sites.

If he does not comply, I will have no choice but to report the matter to the management.

11. How important is preventative maintenance as far as computers are concerned?

Preventative maintenance is extremely important. If you want to make sure that your systems and networks are secure from threats from within and outside, you have to make sure that preventative measures such as data backup, antivirus software installation, and firewalls setup are in place.
