Position Overview
A barback provides support services to bartenders and cocktail servers – they are usually hired by dedicated bars, high-end restaurants and hotels. These people are responsible for making sure that the work at the bar is not compromised due to any reason including high patron volume. Sometimes, barbacks work in the background, making sure that the counters are clean and kegs are timely changed. At others, they may work at the forefront, ensuring that servers are provided with completed orders.
Barbacks spend a lot of their time observing and assisting bartenders, so they get to learn a lot about the work. Eventually, you may qualify to work as a bartender, so make sure that you properly observe the work of the bartender who you are assisting.
Qualifications & Skills
To be considered eligible to work as a barback, you have to possess a high school diploma or a GED at the very least. Some experience of working in the hospitality industry may come in handy if this is the work that you want to do. Even if you do not have any experience, you may be considered a great contender to work as a barback because a lot of the training will be done on the job. Since there will be times when you will be working at the frontend, you will need to know all there is to know about customer services and guest satisfaction.

• Assist bartender by providing them with easy access to liquors, juices and water bottles
• Ascertain that all ashtrays on the bar counter are cleaned and replaced at frequent intervals
• Clean and wipe tables and counters to ensure a consistently clean bar setup
• Change kegs when required, and ensure that garnishes and mixes stock is available at all times
• Ascertain that clean glassware is made available in a constant manner, and ensure that glasses are collected and washed in a timely fashion
• Arrange for ingredients of drinks to be available to the bartender, fill ice buckets and cut and prepare fruit and garnishes
• Stock coolers with beers and make sure that all liquor bottles behind the bar are properly placed
• Greet patrons and provide them with menus and assist them in choosing drinks according to their specific tastes
• Dispose of trash, clean and sweep the bar and sitting areas, and restock refrigerators before the end of each shift
• Relay food orders to the kitchen area, ensuring that they are followed up in a manner so that they are served along with complementing drinks
