Tell us something about the duties that you have performed in an electrical contractor position.
I have worked as an electrical contractor for 7+ years. During this time, I have performed many duties such as:
• Determining design specifications for each wiring project
• Locating underground wiring systems in existing buildings
• Developing and overseeing repair plans on wiring systems and components
• Overseeing installation of electrical services for commercial and residential buildings
• Implementing new energy management systems and equipment
• Checking pre-construction documents such as blueprints in order to determine specifications
• Responding to emergency calls, and troubleshooting and fixing issues
What skills do you bring to the table in this role?
I am an exceptionally organized individual, with excellent skills in developing wiring systems for new, as well as existing projects.
Specifically, I am skilled in:
• Understanding building structures in order to lay down electrical services
• Developing plans and layouts of electrical systems which meet customers’ requirements
• Installing and maintaining wiring and control systems
• Inspecting electrical components for faults or improvement needs
• Repairing and replacing wires, equipment, and systems by proper use of hand and power tools
What makes this work worth your while?
Working as an electrical contractor is a great way to learn new things. I get challenged many times in a day, and I love polishing my skills to do even better. Also, the work is something that I had always wanted to do, which makes everything extremely worthwhile.
How do you feel about working in a situation that is potentially dangerous?
I must admit that I was a bit hesitant when I started my apprenticeship. However, I have seen over the years that there is no danger if you take all the precautions. So, I ensure that safety measures are properly put into place before any project is begun.
What do you deem is more difficult – working in a commercial or a residential setting? Why?
To be perfectly candid, both have the same amount of challenges. Their type may be different, but at the end of the day, the work is challenging on the whole.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently learning all there is to know about electrical systems. In time, I would like to work in a supervisory role.
