Position Overview

A food bank volunteer provides assistance in distributing food items to people enrolled in the food bank.

This work is usually suitable for people who genuinely care about others, and hope to make a difference in the world, or at least, as far as they can reach out.

This volunteer role provides you the opprtunity to learn new things, keep yourself active, and make new friends.

As a food bank volunteer, you will be required to handle outreach activities, as well as some paperwork related to handling report submissions.

Working as a food bank volunteer may be a great start to you providing your services in a food program officer capacity later on.

Food Bank Volunteer Qualifications

To work as a food bank volunteer, you do not need more than a high school diploma or a GED equivalent.

Previous volunteer experience in a similar capacity will make things easy for you, as you will require minimal assistance in learning the ropes of the work.

Patience is a virtue when you are working in this position, as you will be performing a wide variety of tasks that require you to wait for things to come to order.

Excellent organizational skills and a great ability to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life are great virtues.

Food Bank Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities

• Look through work orders to determine placement and type of food distribution activities that need to be carried out.
• Review lists to determine the number of people enrolled in a food bank program, and acquire information on how to strategize serving them.
• Assist procurement officers in receiving and unloading food packets from delivery trucks, and ensure that they are properly put away in storage areas.
• Ensure that food items are properly rotated so that they remain fresh until the time that they need to be served.
• Welcome participants to the assigned food program and check their names off the provided list.
• Distribute food items to participants accessing the food support program, and take their signatures on receipts.
• Prepare food distribution rooms, and stock and stack items in an orderly manner.
• Maintain food quality through appropriate sorting and communicate any issues to the manager.
• Create and submit reports of all distributed items, and ensure that all interactions with participants are kept confidential.
