Recovery Coach Job Description

Position Overview

A recovery coach is an individual who provides clients with assistance and direction in recovering from an illness, mainly associated with drug/substance abuse.

These people are mostly individuals who assist others in a lot of ways, including mentally, emotionally, and physically. This type of work can take a major toll on an individual’s emotional stability, which is why not everyone can do it.

However, if working as a recovery coach is what you want to do, it is best if you know what the work entails, and what a hiring manager would look for in you. A bachelor’s degree in human services is a prerequisite of working at this position.

In addition to this, one has to be somewhat experienced in this regard, as an experienced individual is always given great consideration. Working as a recovery coach is no small fry. You have to make a lot of effort to understand your clients, and their backgrounds, and then come up with the right type of solutions to help them. Knowledge of mental health and co-occurring behavior will go a long way in making you an excellent person to hire at this position. Moreover, you will need to be able to diagnose your clients properly, so that a well-structured plan of care can be developed and implemented.

Recovery Coach Duties & Responsibilities

• Engage clients in conversation to determine their physical and mental health, and emotional stability.

• Go through clients’ files, to determine their histories, and the type of illnesses they had, or drugs that were involved.

• Create and maintain effective relationships with clients and their families to ensure their comfort.

• Assess assigned clients to determine their care and recovery needs, and note them down for reference purposes.

• Develop and implement well-placed recovery programs, to meet the individual needs of each client.

• Identify and research recovery resources within the community, and provide clients and their families with information on how to obtain them.

• Create and maintain resource data bank for future references, and ensure that it is constantly updated.

• Maintain one on one relationships with clients, to earn and retain their confidence in the recovery program.

• Assess the efficacy of implemented plans, and provide interventions and modifications, as and when required.

• Create and maintain clients’ records, ensuring that both safety and confidentiality are given priority.
