A server technician may be hired at the entry level, or at an experienced position, depending on the specific needs of an organization.

The work is usually complex, which is why hiring managers prefer to hire people who possess at least some experience in handling servers and maintaining them properly.

Position Requirements

Working as a server technician requires one to obtain/hold a degree in information technology. Most server technicians are not limited to handling servers – they may also be required to manage LAN and WAN networks. It is essential for people working in this position to be highly skilled in processing technology, and the various challenges that it offers.

Moreover, server technicians need to keep themselves updated with the technology so that they can keep servers up and running, according to the continuously changing technological advancements.

To work as a server technician, there are some inherent skills that you need to possess. Good analytic abilities and the capability of determining problems, and troubleshooting them efficiently is critical.

Moreover, you will need to be exceptionally good at communicating with people from different walks of life and be an active team player. As a server technician, your skills and abilities will be tested on many occasions, so you have to make sure that you come out on top.

Server Technician Duties & Responsible


• Monitor and oversee various server infrastructure components and logs, and ensure that they are in sync with protocols.

• Handle network design, configuration, and deployment activities.

• Respond to calls for support through email, on the phone, and in person, and provide suggestions to resolve issues.

• Make physical visits to server stations to determine problems and limitations, and provide required solutions.

• Install necessary hardware and software, and ensure that both are updated on a regular basis.

• Select systems, or build them from scratch, along with configuring and integrating them appropriately.

• Schedule routine maintenance tasks on assigned servers, to ensure that downtime is eradicated.

• Intervene in situations which require an immediate response such as external virus or malware threats.

• Assist in a customer service role, by helping users understand and work with new technology.

• Perform cabling and device patch paneling activities, ensuring that all devices and cables are safely secured.

• Ascertain that all systems are kept updated, through operating system upgrades.

• Oversee and monitor web performance, and network availability, and evaluate connectivity issues as and when they arise.
