A crime prevention specialist works in tandem with the police department to provide a liaison with communities, to ensure that criminal activities are kept at bay. They are experts at what they do – and are trained specially to provide limited intervention when criminal activities do prevail.

To work as a crime prevention specialist, one has to possess great grit and enthusiasm. This work is not for the faint of heart. One has to be hands-on in creating crime prevention strategies, and ensure that they are implemented according to procedures.
If you want to work as a crime prevention specialist, you have to possess a degree in criminal justice at the very least, with some experience in a prior job. If you have worked as a crime prevention officer previously, you may be considered a great candidate to work in this position.
In addition to the requirements mentioned above, you must be physically agile and have the capacity to handle dangerous situations when required. While crime prevention specialists are not really required to provide intervention in handling criminal activities per se, they may become involved if something comes up, and it is up to them to be able to handle them properly.

• Create and maintain liaison between police departments and community members to provide crime prevention education.
• Provide crime prevention presentations, training, and awareness programming support.
• Meet with community members to identify social conditions that may result in neighborhood or community conflicts.
• Identify social conditions that may be responsible for generating community disputes and take appropriate actions.
• Develop and implement a variety of crime and violence prevention programs and activities, and ensure that they are overseen properly.
• Prepare, maintain, and distribute crime prevention literature and materials such as flyers, brochures, and visual displays.
• Conduct residential and commercial security inspections, and review blueprints to determine crime prevention concerns and provide recommendations.
• Assist with special community events, by ensuring that crime prevention measures are taken into account.
• Intervene in explosive situations that may require support, and attempt to neutralize situations.
• Analyze and predict future criminal activities within assigned communities, and develop correlating prevention programs.
