Utility companies hire meter readers where their primary work is to read gas, electricity, and water consumption meters.
They may work in the residential or commercial arena, depending on their specific interest.

Working as a meter reader requires you to possess a working knowledge of reading and recording readings of different types of meters.
A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is necessary to work in this position.
You have to be customer service-oriented and possess the ability to handle multiple tasks in one day. If this is the work that you want to do, you will also need to maintain great insight into handling bill collection, and logging activities.

• Look through service orders to determine locations where meter reading needs to be performed.
• Read electric, water, gas, and steam consumption meters, recording meter readings including volume and units.
• Inspect meters and connections to determine defects, faults, and damages.
• Communicate problems with meters or incorrect readings to the supervisor.
• Record meter readings on provided logs, ensuring that accuracy is taken into account.
• Verify readings to determine if any abnormal functions or fluctuations are evident and ensure that these are investigated.
• Ensure that services are timely switched on for new subscriptions, and switched off in cases of non-payment or empty premises.
• Inspect meters to determine if any unauthorized connections are evident and take immediate action to report or correct them.
• Report maintenance and equipment problems to company personnel and ensure their resolution immediately.
• Collect past due bills, and deposit them in the company’s account, by following established protocols.
• Respond to customers’ questions regarding services and charges, according to the policies of the company.
• Update customers’ addresses, and meter location information, in cases of changes in the original data.
• Ensure that all data in the utility log book is maintained correctly, and kept updated.
