Working as an exterminator may not be as much fun as Jesse from Full House makes it seem, but it is a great career for people who are experts at handling pest control activities.

So even if Jesse has inspired you to take up this line of career, you will need a little more to make sure that you do well in this role. Working as an exterminator is certainly no fun and games – it is serious business – and you can only do justice to it if you are aware of how to handle the many intricacies of this work.

You can work as an exterminator in a residential, commercial, or even an agricultural capacity, depending on where your interest is.

Working at this position requires you to possess great physical agility, and the capacity to work in both extreme hot and cold weather conditions. You have to know the different ways in which pest control activities need to be performed, and the manner in which they are safely executed as well. Moreover, you will need to be hands-on in creating and implementing plans to exterminate vermin and pests, in as humane a way as possible.

A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is usually sufficient to work as an exterminator. Prior experience in a pest control capacity will come in handy when applying for a job. Here is a list of duties that you will be performing when working as an exterminator:

• Confer with clients to determine their pest control and extermination requirements, and provide plausible solutions.
• Inspect premises to determine the vastness and type of infestation, and determine ways of controlling it.
• Create and implement core pest control and extermination plans, in accordance with the needs of each situation.
• Serve as an informational and technical resource regarding pest control services to assigned clients.
• Determine appropriate treatment methods, processes, and materials required for each project.
• Coordinate with pest control leads, and site managers to determine application schedule.
• Prepare equipment and tools for pest control or extermination processes, ensuring that they are properly calibrated.
• Ensure that pesticides are used in accordance with the instructions provided on their labels.
• Store equipment, tools, and materials in a safe place, after they have been used and cleaned.
• Perform preventative and regular maintenance of equipment and tools, to maintain their conditions.
• Clean and maintain areas that may harbor pests, by using rakes, brooms, shovels, and mops.
