Very few employers hire people without first asking for a recommendation from a previous employer. Knowing how an employee will fit in (if at all) an organization is important for an employer who wants to hire the best. So if you have been approached by an ex-employee to write a recommendation letter for him or her, you need to be able to truthfully say that this person was a credit to you.
How does this recommendation letter thing work? Primarily, it is important for the recommender to know what purpose his or her recommendation will serve. Once you know this, you can begin by providing information of how you know the person for whom you’re writing the recommendation. Lead your letter to inform the reader that the person is a good candidate for the job because of reasons X, Y and Z. And your job is done!
Always remember that a recommendation letter is a positive document – even if you have something negative to say about the individual, hold your peace. Just write nice things! The following recommendation letter written especially for a taxi driver will give you an idea how to go about writing one:

To Whom It May Concern
It is with immense pleasure that I am writing this letter of recommendation for Mr. Richard Bailey, who has worked as a taxi driver for my company since January 2011. Richard has been a constant source of help and encouragement since the day he joined the fleet, and I have been quite fortunate to have hired him.
Over the previous 5 years, I have received constant feedback from happy clients, who have specifically asked for Richard to be their driver every time. As a person, he is pleasant and accommodating. As a professional, he is conscientious and organized. I have always looked at him as a complete package – someone who knows his work and is honest with it.
Realizing that Richard will no longer be working at Al’s Taxi Services was quite a shock – he had taken over a lot of my administrative responsibilities over the years, the logistics of handling the taxi fleet being his main job. Nevertheless, I wish him all the best for his future endeavors, and give him my highest recommendation.
If you feel the need for further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
