The basic work of a local delivery driver is to deliver goods within a city or area. The work is straightforward but not unchallenging. One has to be on one’s feet at all times, delivering items on time, and at the right place.

Educational Requirements

In order to work as a local delivery driver, you have to possess a high school diploma or a GED equivalent. You must possess a valid license and some experience in driving delivery trucks and vans.

Skills and Knowledge

As a local delivery driver, you must know how to handle loading and transporting items. And you should also possess the knowledge of taking payments and tendering change and receipts. Adhering to assigned routes, and following time schedules is important when working as a local delivery driver.

As a local delivery driver, you must fully understand how to operate and safely drive assigned vehicles. Also, you should possess experience in mapping delivery routes using technology.

Local Delivery Driver Duties and Responsibilities

• Check work orders in order to determine daily deliveries and loads

• Inspect assigned vehicles to ensure that they are in good working order

• Pick up loads, and place them on delivery vans or trucks in a proper way

• Ensure that loads are properly and safely stacked

• Map routes on standard maps and the GPS, and ensure that they are followed properly

• Drive assigned trucks or vans to delivery destinations

• Unload items from trucks, and hand them to customers

• Take the money and tender receipts and change

• Obtain signatures on receipts

• Inform dispatchers of deliveries made in a day

• Ensure that truck or van is safely returned to the docking stations

• Perform preventative and regular maintenance on assigned vehicles

• Adhere to all traffic laws and rules

• Prepare delivery reports, and present them to supervisors

• Contact customers in order to confirm delivery addresses and times

• Ensure that all transportation laws are adhered to

• Handle emergencies such as accidents and breakdowns according to protocols

• Answer customers’ questions regarding their items, as best as possible

• Prevent breakage or damage to items by properly checking them during transit

• Maintain delivery logs with accurate and detailed information

• Ensure that waste or hazardous materials are safely handled

• Manually transport items from delivery trucks to customers’ doors

• Report suspicious packages to supervisors

• Respond to customers’ questions and queries in accordance with company protocol

• Ensure that any vehicle damage or repair needs are clearly communicated to the supervisor
