23 Fashion Designer Interview Questions and Answers

Fashion designers need to possess a certain skill set to be considered for the position. This information needs to be highlighted during the interview process, along with experience in this regard.

You will be asked questions to gauge your aesthetic sense during the interview, so you need to be prepared for it.

At the interview for a fashion designer position, the interviewer’s main focus will be judging your capabilities.

It is important for you to build upon the information that you have provided in your job application documents.

Focusing on your knowledge of the fashion industry, specifically trends and competition will go a long way in motivating the interviewer to hire you.

1. Tell me a little about yourself.

I possess a degree in fashion designing. After I obtained my degree, I started working for a local fashion house in the city. From there, I moved to work for one of the biggest fashion houses in the city. My interest in fashion designing is not new – I had an eye for trends even before I took up this degree.

2. Tell me something about your experience in this regard.

As a fashion designer, I have performed many duties, including managing design processes from inception to completion and conducting market research to identify trends and techniques. Additionally, my work involves creating production sketches and collaborating with designers to make them come alive. Furthermore, my duties include selecting fabrics and embellishments presenting designs to creative directors and overseeing the final production of each design.

3. What do you like most about this work?

I love the fact that there is no end to learning and developing when you are working as a fashion designer.

4. What do you like the least about this work?

I feel that the competition can sometimes get ugly, which makes it difficult to enjoy the work too much.

5. From where do you take your inspiration?

I am inspired by so many things, including other designers, people around me, and even nature.

6. What do you do to make sure that your designs remain unique?

When I say I take inspiration, that is all that I do! I make sure that I do not copy other people’s designs – not even part of it. I make sure that I project original ideas, and work on my designs from scratch.

7. According to you, what skills are most important when working as a fashion designer?

I believe that an inherent aesthetic sense is most important when working as a fashion designer. Apart from this, it is important to be able to develop ideas and work on them tirelessly.

8. How do you stay updated regarding fashion?

My research skills are excellent which makes it easy for me to remain updated on new fashion. In addition, I make a conscious effort to attend all fashion shows and make sure that I keep an active eye on the competition.

9. What is your greatest strength?

I feel that my greatest strength is my ability to handle many design projects at the same time.

10. What is your greatest weakness?

Sometimes I feel that I delve too much into my work, making it impossible for me to rest.

11. How well do you work in a team environment?

I work extremely well in a team environment, but I can also work equally well when I am flying solo.

12. How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is always in sync with what I am doing. For instance, if I am working, I wear comfortable clothes that have an edge of design to them.

13. In which area of fashion design do you wish to work?

I have worked in the most popular fashion design areas. However, my most favorite is street fashion wear.

14. How do you handle stress?

Stress is a usual part of work as a fashion designer. I can handle stress well. I organize my day and work duties in such a way that nothing gets me down.

15. How comfortable are you in working with models and designers?

I have a great way with people. I am extremely comfortable working with people from all walks of life, especially those that are part of the industry.

16. Do you like fashion trends of now or past ones?

I feel that every era has its own fashion moments, so you cannot really compare them with each other. The ones in the past were wonderful for that era, but will probably not be welcomed now, even though, some old fashion trends are returning. I like all fashion unless it is highly distasteful.

17. How do you feel about the top fashion trends?

As far as I am concerned, to each their own. However, some of them do get to me, but I keep thinking that there might be a streak that I have not developed yet.

18. Describe a time when you struggled with motivation?

About 2 years ago, I was quite upset because no design that I came up with was worth anything, even to me. I was seriously struggling for motivation and it was nowhere around me. Then, I decided to just give it a rest. After 3 days of not thinking, I had a lightbulb moment, and came up with a highly successful fashion line within 3 weeks!

19. What motivates you primarily?

Oddly enough, my own work motivates or demotivates me.

20. Can you handle adversity at the workplace?

The fashion industry runs on adversity, unfortunately. However, I have managed to rise above it all. I make sure that adversity does not bother me one bit.

21. If we hire you, when can you join us?

My present workplace has a stringent 60-days’ notice policy. I can join as soon I give in my notice, and 60 days are up.

22. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself working as a head of fashion design in a leading fashion house.

23. Do you have any questions for me?

I am interested in finding out more about your work, and how you manage to stay atop the competition, even when regression hits.
