What is the most difficult part of working as a head custodian in a school?
I do not deem anything difficult where work is concerned. Challenges are an everyday thing in my work, and I have no issues in welcoming them and then proactively dealing with them.
As a head custodian, what have been some of your principal duties?
While working as a head custodian, I have been actively leading teams of custodians to handle cleaning and maintenance tasks, creating and implementing schedules, and ensuring that all custodial staff members follow them, overseeing the work of custodial staff members, providing assistance and direction where required, and ensuring that all supplies and equipment are properly used, handled, and stored.
What skills set do you think one needs to work successfully as a school head custodian?
The first skill that one needs to be successful in working as a head custodian is leadership capabilities. Apart from this, it is essential to understand the difference between working at this position in a school, as opposed to in another environment. Knowledge of cleaning and maintenance work and the ability to handle inventory management (of cleaning and maintenance equipment and supplies) is also necessary to possess.
How is working in a school different than working in another capacity?
There are children involved where schools are concerned, and you have to make sure that no harm comes to them. For instance, not placing a wet floor sign can result in serious injuries, and since we are talking about all age groups of children here, it can become a bit tricky. Also, it is important to make sure that your work does not hinder school activities.
How long did it take you to reach a platform, where you are now working in a supervisory role?
I worked as a custodian for five years, before I was deemed the right choice to head a team of custodial staff members. To be honest, I feel that there is still a lot to learn.
As far as strengths are concerned, what is the one strength that you can identify, which makes it easy for you to excel in your current role?
I am an excellent communicator, which makes it easy for me to communicate to custodial staff what needs to be done. I believe that this strength is what has made me so successful in this work.
