Import Export Coordinator Qualifications
Typically, an import and export coordinator requires a high school diploma or a GED to work successfully at this position. A degree in business or a related field will go a long way in convincing a hiring manager to consider the applicant’s application.
Experience in the freight forwarding sector is a plus point when applying for an import and export coordinator position. Good communication skills are necessary, as is the ability to work in an organized manner. Since this work can prove to be quite complicated at times, one has to be able to take problems in stride and look for viable solutions.
Delayed shipments can make many customers upset, resulting in decreased business opportunities, which is why it is imperative for people working at this position to be hands-on in what they are doing, and understand the importance of working efficiently.
Import Export Coordinator Duties & Responsibilities
• Look through work orders to determine imports and exports that are expected for the week.
• Prepare price quotations on inbound imports, and provide customers with correlating information.
• Create requests for rate correspondence, and ensure that a proper follow-up is performed.
• Develop load tenders and ensure that they are efficiently distributed to the appropriate transportation provider.
• Prepare and assemble freight documents, as they relate to both imports and exports.
• Oversee billing work, and ensure that entries are corrected to make sure that no discrepancies are evident.
• Expedite inbound import traffic, aimed at facilitating customs clearance, and assist with items that may be stopped at customs.
• Initiate and maintain customers’ master profiles, aimed at ensuring that the correct information is updated.
• Communicate instructions to vendors, ensuring that they follow them when delivering a shipment.
• Ensure the day to day monitoring of all exports and imports of the assigned business unit.
• Interact with multiple functional areas, including such as management, supply chain, distribution, and finance.
