1. What has been your journey to the position of a billing analyst?
I started out by working as a billing clerk, and then a billing officer. It was during my latter tenure that I realized that this work was not just working, but something that I looked forward to each day – I actually love everything about this work and have now been working as a billing analyst for five years.
2. In the role of a billing analyst, what were some of the primary duties that you performed?
I have been working as a billing analyst for a pretty long time now, and my work involves generating timely and accurate client billing, calculating invoice amounts while closely following procedures and billing rules of contracts, reviewing clients’ contracts for proper billing procedures, preparing past due balances statements, billing clients according to set schedules, monitoring and following up on missing timesheets, overseeing cash receipts against sub-contractor billing trackers, and assisting project teams in the follow-up and collection of aging invoices.
3. In your opinion, what skills does one require to work effectively in the role of a billing analyst?
Knowing billing and accounting work inside out is important. Apart from this, it is imperative to understand how to use electronic billing systems, possess knowledge of reviewing contracts for new projects as they relate to billing, ability to reconcile entries, exceptional skills in preparing clients’ invoices in accordance with set contracts, and comprehension of handling data entry errors.
4. What was the most challenging task that you had to handle in a billing analyst capacity?
I had recently joined a company in the role of a billing analyst, and soon found out that the company was hosting over $1,500,000 in aging invoices! It was quite a shock for me, and even more, one when I was asked to get all of them paid! While it was impossible to follow up and ensure that all of this amount was paid back, I managed to get 65% of it collected. But the hard work that went into it was colossal!
5. What is it about the work that you find most difficult?
Nothing, to be honest. The work is not difficult at all – it can be challenging at times, but then I am someone who thrives in a challenging environment, so I don’t mind going the extra mile to make something happen.
6. What are your 5-year career plans?
I see myself as a billing director within the next 5 years!
