Working in a school needs a lot of expertise, primarily if you work in an administrative capacity. However, no matter how much knowledge you possess, an interview for a job is always a harrowing time.

1. How would you explain the role of a school administrative assistant?

A school administrative assistant is a jack of all trades and master of many. Providing secretarial support to the principal, handling admissions, liaising with parents and teachers, and managing essential filing and record management duties is all in a day’s work.

An essential part of a school administrative assistant’s job is to provide administrative support to the school’s management in handling both student discipline and attendance.

2. What two critical administrative skills that you deem the most important while working in a school?

I believe that there is nothing more important than the ability to multitask when you are in an administrative position, especially in a school. There are many things that you have to juggle during a day, and this helps. Also, one needs to be very detail-oriented as there is much scope for mistakes in activities such as record management and filing.

3. What do you deem your greatest weakness, and how do you overcome it?

I consider being a perfectionist as a weakness as I am never satisfied with the work that I do. However, recently, I have begun to think of it as an opportunity to look at the bigger picture and stop while I am ahead.

4. Tell us about a suggestion that you made which had a positive impact on the school.

At my previous workplace, the reception area was not in accord with the kind of education that the school professed to supply. I saw many parents turn away after just taking some initial information and then never following up.

I attributed it to the fact that they felt that the school’s education might not be up to the mark, considering the way the front office was kept. Since I believe in the cliché, “the first impression is the last impression,” I suggested revamping the front area and saw an immediate increase in interest in the school.

Written and verbal communication skills, time management, administrative skills, budget management, and ability to relate to the children.

6. How do you deal with conflicting expectations of parents?

This is a situation I have often faced. Usually, I try to find a midway solution so that parents are happy, but sometimes when it is not possible, I stick to the school policy and explain the same in detail.
