Working in a school needs a lot of expertise especially if you work in an administrative capacity. However, no matter how much expertise you possess, an interview for job is always a harrowing time. The mere thought of an interview can put even the best of candidates on a spot. So if you are going to appear in an interview at a school, you may need to consider some things. The first is preparation. If you are well prepared for an interview, nothing can stop you from acing it. But if you are going to appear at an interview without researching the mission of the school, you are bound to feel unconfident during the interview.
So what else should you do if you want to be successful at your interview? Showing confidence you do not feel is another key to success. If outwardly you are confident, it will seem as if you are confident from the inside as well. Eye contact with the interviewer is also very important and needs to be practiced before appearing in an interview.
Following are some possible interview questions and answers which might be asked during interview:
How would you explain the role of a school administrative assistant?
A school administrative assistant is a jack of all trades and master of many. Providing secretarial support to the principal, handling admissions, liaising with parents and teachers and handling important filing and record management duties is all in a day’s work. An important part of a school administrative assistant’s job is to provide administrative support to the school’s management in handling both student discipline and attendance.
What two key administrative skills that you deem the most important while working in a school?
I believe that there is nothing more important than the ability to multitask when you are in an administrative position especially in a school. There are many things that you have to juggle during a day and this helps. Also, one needs to be very detail oriented as there is much scope for mistakes in activities such as record management and filing.
What do you deem your greatest weakness and how do you overcome it?
I consider being a perfectionist as a weakness as I am never satisfied with the work that I do. However, recently I have begun to think of it as an opportunity to look at the bigger picture and stop while I am ahead.
Tell us of a suggestion that you made which had a positive impact on the school.
At my previous workplace, the reception area was not in accord with the kind of education that the school professed to supply. I saw many parents turn away after just taking some initial information and then never following up. I attributed it to the fact that they felt that the school’s education may not be up to the mark considering the way the front office was kept. Since I believe in the cliché “first impression is the last impression”, I suggested revamping the front area and saw an immediate increase in interest in the school.
In your opinion, what are the five most important skills needed to succeed as a school administrative assistant?
Written and verbal communication skills, time management, administrative skills, budget management and ability to relate to the children.
How do you deal with conflicting expectations of parents?
This is a situation I have often faced. Usually I try to find a mid way solution so that parents are happy, but sometimes when it is not possible I simply stick to the school policy and explain the same in detail.
Why do you want to join us?
EduCare is a good name in imparting quality education and I can think of no better place to utilize my skills at. Secondly, I have seen your students perform really well at various national and international competitions and I highly appreciate the innovation your educational system has initiated.
What is your management and leadership style?
I am a born team player. I believe one can achieve much more in a team rather than independently, which is why I am a democratic type of leader and manager. I try to know the team members first and then decide the tasks according to each member’s interest, willingness and caliber.
What computer skills do you have?
I am well versed in MS Word, spreadsheets, power point and outlook. I am also capable of providing system based hardware and software maintenance and operating various web based and social media applications.
