Position Overview
An electrical designer is a person who designs electrical systems like lighting equipment, fire, and other safety systems, electronic components, and power systems. He or she plans and tests these systems, then it is his responsibility to
supervise their development and installation. If a problem crops up, the electrical designer is involved in solving it.
Education and Experience
To work as an electrical designer, you must have an associate or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
If you have a lot of experience, you might be hired even if you have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent.
However, a degree is essential if you wish to progress in your field.
An electrical engineering degree will ensure that you know all the software or programs you will need in your work, like Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and Bentley Microstation software.
Skills and Abilities
Of course, you must be a team player, have the ability to work as part of a team as well as lead a team.
Additionally, you must also be detail-oriented and have excellent communication skills.

Electrical Designer Job Description and Duties
• Understand the need for a particular electrical system, meet with relevant stakeholders like managers and clients, and begin designing the system.
• Design the system using CAD software, including electrical specifications and detailed drawings.
• Estimate how much time it will take to construct the electrical system, and how much labor will be needed.
• Prepare requisitions for all materials needed, and write job descriptions for labor.
• Ensure that all designs are in accordance with standards such as the National Electric Code (NEC).
• Document specifications like schematics and diagrams all through the design process.
• Ensure that all designs, drawings, and other documents work in tandem and are according to the given budget.
• Maintain discipline within the team, seeing to it that everything is done on time.
• Produce regular reports throughout the project, documenting project progress.
• Keep the rest of the team aware of your progress. This is especially important if your designs are part of the overall system and not stand-alone designs.
• Review drawings by suppliers and vendors to ascertain if they are in accordance with the requirements given by your company.
• Oversee the installation of the electrical system, ensuring that everything is done according to plan.
• Play the role of a troubleshooter in case problems arise.
• Keenly monitor the electrical installation to make sure that it runs smoothly, with a minimum of trouble.
