Position Overview

Leak testers work in many capacities. They may work for organizations that manufacture gas machinery, or those that produce air conditioning systems.

No matter which arena they work in, they perform more or less the same work, which is to test leaks in different types of systems.

Position Requirements

Usually, a high school diploma or a GED equivalent is sufficient to work as a leak tester. Of course, prior experience is required to ensure that you know your work completely.

Even if you have held an apprentice position in this capacity, you will be considered a good candidate to hire.

Skills and Abilities

You cannot work as a leak tester if you do not possess certain skills. For instance, you must understand different systems in order to ensure that you can determine leaks in the quickest of manners.

And you must possess excellent knowledge of fixing leaks so that the machine remains in good use.

Working as a leak tester is not easy. In fact, it can be quite complicated, especially during instances when looking for leaks is tough due to the complexity of the system.

Leak Tester Duties and Responsibilities

• Look through work orders in order to determine daily testing tasks.
• Engage clients in conversation to figure out leak intensity.
• Inspect areas or systems in order to determine their working.
• Perform leak detection on different types of systems.
• Use the right detection equipment and tools for different systems.
• Determine the source of the leak by using handheld leak detection tools and equipment.
• Seal leaks temporarily so that they do not cause further damage.
• Figure out ways of fixing leaks permanently.
• Confer with technicians and workers to determine the right methods to fix leaks.
• Assist technicians in fixing leaks by plugging them, or removing and reinstalling pipes.
• Test newly installed systems so as to ensure that they function properly.
• Create and maintain logs of each leak test in an appropriate manner.
• Work with testers by turning valves and adjusting probes.
• Narrow down the range of testers so that accurate results can be obtained.
• Mark numbers on defective or leaking parts in order to be able to find them easily later on.
• Record leak locations in a predetermined manner.
• Work with engineers in order to determine the best way of fixing leaks, and ensuring that they do not happen again.
