I have been quite involved in many other duties including receiving merchandise, ensuring that appropriate storage space is allocated to it, creating and maintaining associated paperwork, determining solutions for discrepancies, and ensuring that the overall operations of the warehouse are run smoothly.
3. What skills does one need to work as a warehouse coordinator?
One had to be extremely perceptive and organized at this position. Gauging the need for additional supplies and managing a workforce in an environment that is fast-paced, is no easy work. To be able to handle it all, it is imperative to be positive, practical, and adaptable. The ability to manage several tasks at the same time and ensure that each process is run properly is of great importance in a warehouse coordinator’s role.
4. Was there a time when despite your best efforts, you were unable to meet the targets that were given to you? What did you do?
The company received a large order of 100,000 pieces for its most popular item. I was short of 1000 as I was not expecting a large order to come at a time when orders are usually slow. It was complete chaos initially. The supplier said that he needed 5 days to send the remaining 1000 and we only had 2 days. I had no choice but to tell my supervisor that we won’t be able to meet the demand. Luck was on our side when the customer was informed and he said it was alright to send the remaining 1000 at a later date.
5. What has been your biggest achievement in this role?
I was responsible for introducing and implementing a novel voice-activated order picking system, which decreased order-picking time by a staggering 85%! This, I believe has been my biggest achievement so far.
6. If you were asked to change one thing about the warehousing system, what would it be and why?
I would try to bring in as much technology as possible. This is because by incorporating technology, processes are handled more efficiently.
