Applying for a donor relations specialist is all very well.

But where the interview procedure is concerned, you really have to make an effort.

Why did you choose to work in donor relations?

It all started with a short internship in an NGO, where I was rotated in many departments. As I started work in donor relations, I realized how well I could do the job. One thing led to another, and I started my first job in donor relations. Ten years later, I am working as a donor relations specialist.

Tell us a little bit about the work that you have done in a donor relations specialist role.

Creating and implementing multi-faceted donor stewardship programs and plans is my main work. Apart from this, I have been organizing and producing various donor communications and mailings and have been coordinating efforts to ensure that donor liaison remains meaningful.

In addition, my work has involved developing and executing various engagement opportunities, and I have been actively conducting ROI assessments, and data analysis work.

Which skill do you believe is most important when working as a donor relations specialist?

I believe that one has to have a solid array of skills if one wants to be considered an eligible individual to hire. However, I would give communication and interpersonal skills a high ranking, as without them, there is no way that any person working in donor relations can be successful.

How do you feel about working in a setting where you have to face challenges all the time?

Challenges are something that I welcome with open hands. In fact, I love challenges as they help me realize the bigger picture, and work towards resolving them.

What is your latest achievement in this role?

Recently, my efforts in obtaining grants were quite successful. The proposal that I wrote to a donor managed to bring in 50% more grant than were asked for.

What plans do you have for the future?

I am hoping to climb the ladder in order to work in a capacity which allows me to train and oversee the work of donor relations specialists.
