Working as a medical typist in the USA, Australia or New Zealand, you will be performing many data entry duties. Medical typists enter medical information such as patient records, treatments provided and insurance information and medication reports in predefined medical databases. They work for clinics and hospitals where another prime responsibility that they have is to man the reception area or provide administrative support to the facility that they represent.

To work as a medical typist, your typing speed must be excellent. You should also be able to handle a huge volume of work within a short span of time and multitask effectively as you will be taking telephone calls and scheduling appointments as well. The key to success in this job is to be a good manager of time and ensure that all the information that you have punched in is correct.

While most medical typists are hired on a full time basis (since they perform other duties as well), some may also be hired for a short period of time in which they have to enter a certain amount of data only without the burden of additional administrative duties. Either way, it is important to be knowledgeable about the medical world so that any discrepancies that may arise during data entry can be picked up and fixed immediately. • Take medical information in form of notes or on the Dictaphone
• Read or listen to information and mentally determine what needs to be transcribed into the system
• Maintain knowledge of road medical terms and acronyms
• Type medical information derived from provided sources into a predefined medical database
• Punch in correspondence, text and reports using word processors
• File patient and associated medical information in proper formats so that they are easily retrievable
• Retrieve medical data from the system on request from authorized personnel
• Maintain accuracy of entered data by checking and rechecking source information
• Report or correct any discrepancies evident in the source document or in the database
• Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of medical records
• Enter patients’ insurance information, claims updates and provided treatment into the medical database
• Take telephone calls from doctors and patients looking for specific medical information
• Schedule patient appointments with doctors and make follow up telephone calls
• Collect and enter patient information from patients by assisting them in filling out forms and answering their queries
