Do not think of your cover letter as something boringly mandatory. Instead, think of it as something creative that you can do. It is true that not everyone can write a cover letter that is creatively inclined, but remember that you do get points for trying! So the next time the thought of writing a cover letter bothers you, think this is my chance to prove that my written communication skills are exceptional. And you will find yourself writing one that is actually exceptional!
Cover letter writing has some rules though. And you need to follow them. But you can bend them a little to suit your own needs. How? Well, cover letters are required to be written professionally. But if the company that you are applying to has no taste for stiffness (and you know for sure that it doesn’t), you can tweak the tone and border it on sassy. Yes, high spiritedness never hurts!
Coming to the actual content, a cover letter needs to be written in a way that the information flows. Disjointed cover letters are immediately trashed. The strength of your candidature for a job depends on how well you can structure your cover letter. A hiring manager doesn’t know you – he has to depend on what you tell him.
Are we good to go now? Great! Sample ahead!

Dear Mr. Joel:
This letter and the enclosed resume is a genuine expression of interest in the hospital maintenance worker position currently available at Blount Memorial Hospital.
For me, maintenance work is not just about cleanliness. My maintenance philosophy is a class apart, as you will be able to judge from the attached resume. Since I have worked in three different hospitals in the previous 12 years, I am aware of the varying demands of each type of facility and can easily cater to those needs.
Specifically, my qualifications as a hospital maintenance worker include:
• Track record of performing minor and major repair work on both buildings and non-medical equipment
• An energetic individual who is known for efficiently cleaning and sanitizing facility floors to ensure that diseases are kept at bay
• Demonstrated ability to inspect hospital buildings to identify maintenance issues and address them immediately
If you meet me in person, you will discover that my skills are actually at par with your requirements. Possessing specific awareness of handling cleaning and maintenance duties pertinent to hospitals, I am definitely a cut above other contenders for this job.
I will be in touch with you next week to set up a meeting. You can reach me at (000) 123-7478 if you need any further information in the meantime. Thank you for your time and consideration.
