HVAC Helper Job Description, Duties, and Responsibilities

Working as an HVAC helper may be a lot of work, but it also teaches one a lot. In this role, you work alongside an HVAC technician so that you can help in installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems.

Position Requirements

Typically, a high school diploma or a GED equivalent is sufficient to work as an HVAC helper. An apprenticeship in a similar capacity can do wonders for your chances to be selected for this position.

Skills & Abilities

As far as skills are concerned, you have to possess knowledge of the inner workings of HVAC systems, both in commercial and residential settings. Furthermore, you must be able to use the tools and equipment necessary for this work.

In addition, you must be physically dexterous if this is the work that you want to do, as oftentimes, you have to bend and stoop.

Also, it is imperative for an HVAC helper to be able to take and carry out instructions properly so that all tasks are done in an appropriate manner.

• Look through order stubs in order to determine work for the day.
• Take and follow instructions regarding the collection and acquisition of tools and equipment.
• Ensure that all tools and materials required for an HVAC project are in good working order.
• Assist HVAC technicians in installing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems on commercial and private properties.
• Inspect installed HVAC systems in order to determine their working.
• Check for problems such as leaks and malfunctions, and mark any prominent issues.
• Perform regular as well as preventative maintenance on HVAC systems.
• Assist in identifying maintenance risks on HVAC systems.
• Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults in HVAC systems.
• Ensure that all systems remain in compliance with standards and protocols.
• Ensure that preventative maintenance and cleaning tasks are performed on equipment and tools used for HVAC installation and maintenance.
• Measure and prepare the materials required for HVAC installations.
• Assist in the installation and maintenance of ducts and ducting systems.
• Ensure proper delivery and removal of equipment from client sites.
• Create and maintain records of all HVAC installations, repair, and maintenance tasks.
• Enforce safety measures before, during, and after each process.
• Educate clients about the use and maintenance of heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.
• Devise and implement methods in order to ensure that clients’ property remains safe.
