Remodeling Contractor Job Description

The work of a remodeling contractor is to assist carpenters in remodeling different parts of a building.

Depending on the situation, a person working in this position may use his workforce to do the job, or lead apprentices to perform the work. Usually, a remodeling contractor reports to the lead carpenter.

To be considered eligible to work as a remodeling contractor, you do not need more than a high school diploma or a GED equivalent, as far as formal education goes.

But you do need to possess knowledge of the work, as you will essentially be leading remodeling work modules.

In addition to this, it is important that people working in this position are aware of the correct use of tools and equipment required to complete a remodeling project. Moreover, remodeling contractors need to be able to handle the various tasks associated with the work, including jobsite cleaning, light electrical and plumbing work, and masonry activities, such as replacing windows, doors, and cabinets.

• Confer with clients to determine their specific remodeling requirements, and create correlating notes.

• Engage lead carpenter in conversation to discuss the various ways in which remodeling projects can be expedited.

• Create and present cost estimates for remodeling work, ensuring that clients’ budgets are kept in mind.

• Obtain approvals from clients, and make arrangements to begin remodeling projects, by acquiring materials, equipment, and labor.

• Plan all phases of the remodeling project from conception to completion, ensuring that each project modules is overseen properly.

• Prepare timetables, to present clients with information on project timelines.

• Interact with other professionals such as designers and engineers, to obtain detailed information about the remodeling project.

• Instruct workers to perform remodeling work, including handling light plumbing and electrical work, and installing windows and doors.

• Assist workers with complex remodeling work, such as installing pergolas and false ceilings.

• Create and maintain logs of all work activities, and their timelines, and ensure that clients are kept up to date about the progress of their projects.
