Writing a cover letter is something a lot of people hate to do. They painstakingly write their resumes, attach with email and send them off, thinking that they’ve done their bit in applying for this job they really want. Then they wait for the interview call, and are surprised when it doesn’t come.
Well, it didn’t come because the hiring manager didn’t read the resume, because there was no cover letter found in the body of the email.
You see, hiring managers get dozens, sometimes hundreds of resumes for each vacancy they advertise. It’s a terrible job going through hundreds of resumes – the hiring manager will not read every one. He or she will take a quick look to see if the packet includes a cover letter, and put the rest of the resumes in the folder that says “later”. Then he’ll read the cover letters, and the resumes to go with the ones he finds interesting.
You’ve heard of the game of thrones – now read up on the game of words. This is when you use words to convince somebody of something. Talk about your skills and how you can use them to assist the employer. What is it that sets you apart from other people, when it comes to skills? What it is, is that you are what he needs to make his company more successful. Now all you have to do is convince him. A little like this:
