Using names (name dropping) is a great cover letter writing strategy. Even if the hiring manager does not really take to the idea of references, his judgement will probably be affected by the name that has popped up. And he might be forced to look at your candidature in a positive manner. How does this work? This works wonderfully. You write a cover letter by starting off with the name dropping strategy and go on to provide details of how great you are for the company.
If you know someone inside the company to which you are applying, name dropping becomes easy. If you have been referred by an outsider who may be known to the hiring manager, even better. But simple references do not make great impressions. Once has to possess a little more than mere contacts to be a successful applicant. The fact that you are a good candidates will be reflected by how you outline your accomplishments and skills. Yes, both need to be included in the cover letter. If you cannot put in accomplishments, make sure that you put in skills and qualifications. Anything that will make you shine as a candidate will work. Make sure that the information that you put in is usable for the employer and not mere fluff. For most cover letters, these will suffice.
