Yard Hand Job Description, Duties, and Responsibilities

Position Overview

A yard hand or a yard worker is an individual who works in a support role in a number of work areas.

He or she is expected to handle the many small tasks associated with different types of yards, including car facilities, producers, and warehouses.

The work of a yard hand can be compared to a general worker, as there are a lot of things that he or she is expected to perform that are of a “general” nature.

Yard Hand Qualifications

Typically, a high school diploma or a GED equivalent is required to work as a yard hand.

Physical strength is the essential requirement of someone working as a yard hand.

A yard worker is expected to perform many tasks that may be not be related to each other.

Each function that one performs needs to be done by employing exceptional organizational skills.

Since a lot of things will depend on how well you perform work since it will be done in a tier 1 capacity, you do have to make an effort to come out on top.

Yard Hand Duties & Responsibilities

• Receive shipments and assist in unloading them from delivery trucks, ensuring that goods and items remain safe.
• Ensure that the receiving department double-checks the shipment for accuracy and completeness of orders.
• Remove parts from cars and other vehicles in the yard and inspect parts to provide information about the damage.
• Assist in arranging for replacement parts to be made available to customers, and ensure that they are packed properly.
• Operate forklifts or order selection machines to transport parts in and about warehouses.
• Load, unload, and move materials and items by hand or by using material handling equipment.
• Handle counting, sorting, packing, and unpacking activities as part of the material sorting work.
• Wash and polish cars and other vehicles within the yard, and ensure that proper detailing work is performed on them.
• Ensure that the car yard is properly maintained and kept clean at all times, by following set instructions.
• Assist in the loading of delivery trucks, ensuring that each item is properly placed and secured within the truck.
