How do you feel about working in a maintenance role, in a school capacity?
Working as a school maintenance worker is right down my alley, as I have worked in a similar capacity before. I find the work highly interesting and challenging, and I look forward to each work day.
What duties have you performed in this role, in the past?
As a school maintenance worker, I have been handling a wide array of duties, including cleaning and mopping surfaces, repairing electrical boards and switches, performing maintenance work such as changing or replacing bulbs, handling minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, installing appliances and equipment, and testing the school’s alarm systems for functionality.
What set of skills do you think is necessary to work as a school maintenance worker?
In my opinion, it is imperative to possess extensive knowledge of maintenance and repair work, and how it can safely be applied in a school setting. Expertise in troubleshooting problems, and repairing electrical systems is also a must-have capability. Apart from this, it is very important for school maintenance workers to be hands-on in working with HVAC systems, and possess the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and drawings.
Do you find anything different between working for a school and working for a residential building?
To be perfectly honest, the work is more or less the same. However, in a school, one has to be extra careful when performing repair and maintenance duties, as there is student wellbeing to take into account.
Tell us of a time when you achieved something, which you are proud of?
I was recently asked to handle cleaning and maintenance tasks for 2 school buildings – all to be completed before an inspection was due to take place. Both schools were under the same administration, but were stationed quite far away from each other. It took all that I had to finish the job in a satisfactory manner, but I did it on time, and managed to earn commendation for it as well.
Where do you see yourself – professionally speaking – 3 years from now?
I am working hard to learn the ropes as well as I can, and climb up to the position of a maintenance supervisor soon. This is my short-term goal at the moment.
