Doormen work for hotels, residential facilities, office buildings, and even educational facilities.

Depending on which industry you want to join as a doorman, you have to prepare for the door interview process accordingly.

Preparing for the doorman interview process will include you making a mental list of all the experience that you have and the skills that you have derived from that experience.

During the interview, you should focus on your skills in greeting and assisting people, and responding to initial inquiries. Additionally, highlight your ability to stay alert and monitor activities in and around your station.

Specifically, you will be asked some or all of the following questions in the doorman interview.

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself.

I have worked as a doorman for 10 years in hotels as well as residential buildings. I love the work because of the fact that it gives great opportunities to meet new people, and serve in a customer service capacity.

2. Recount some of the duties that you have performed in the role of a doorman.

As a doorman, I have been busy performing many tasks such as meeting and greeting people and providing initial information about the facility. Verifying and recording visitor information is also part of my work. Maintaining logbooks, and ensuring that incoming deliveries are checked properly is also part of my work. In addition, my work involves ensuring that reception and entrance areas remain clean and maintained at all times.

3. Tell me a little about the skills that you possess.

I am a highly interactive individual, which makes me an excellent person to work as a doorman. I am also intuitive, which is a great plus since I can determine issues immediately, and can often foresee problems. Moreover, I am well-versed in providing the right information to people and ensuring that they are professionally directed to the right places or rooms within the building.

4. What do you like most about this work?

I love the fact that I am on my feet most of the day. Since I do not like desk jobs or sitting down for too long, this is the perfect job for me.

5. What do you dislike about this job?

I do not dislike the job at all. I wouldn’t be able to do it if I disliked it.

6. How do you handle conflict in the workplace?

My work gives very little opportunity for conflict. On the rare occasion that conflict does arise, my concentration is always on breaking it up, and not letting it affect my work by distracting me.

7. How do you handle the influx of many visitors at the same time?

The company that I am working for has set protocols in place in case there is a large influx of people. I simply follow and enforce rules, and everything is sorted automatically.

8. What is your greatest strength as a doorman?

My greatest strength is my ability to stay alert at all times. My coworkers often joke that I have eyes all around my head.

9. What is your greatest weakness as a doorman?

I have recently overcome being too involved in my coworkers’ problems. While I used to see it as a support system that I was offering, I see that it affects my work. And since work is my priority, I cannot let anything affect it negatively.

10. What is the most difficult part of working as a doorman?

I feel that all areas of working as a doorman are complex, as the entire security of the building and the people inside is on one’s shoulders.

11. Have you ever encountered something that made you sit up and take notice?

As a matter of fact, I recently stopped a terror attack on the building that I was working for. A religious fanatic who did not like the fact that the building had residents from all ethnicities and religions decided it was okay to place a firecracker bomb in the lobby. I hadn’t seen this man before so I was a bit suspicious of him. He came to the entrance, and I stopped him purely on instinct. A guard searched him and discovered that he had explosives on him. He was pinned down right there by us, and the authorities were called in.

12. What is your method of accepting and passing on packages?

I make sure that I check all incoming packages to ensure that there are no nefarious activities happening in the building. The organization that I work for has strict rules regarding this. When a package is received, both the courier and the receiver are asked to come outside, and the package is opened by the receiver. I give the go-ahead if all is good.

13. What do you know about customer services?

Customer or guest service is a huge thing in my line of work. When there is no one else to do the job, I make sure that I open car doors for people. I assist them in finding who they are looking for, and I provide support with carrying bags to and from their vehicles.

14. Do you mind doing some things which are not part of your original job description?

Not at all. I do not mind going the extra mile to do tasks. In fact, it gives me a feeling of great happiness to be able to go out of my way to help someone.

15. When can you join us if we decide to hire you?

My notice period ends on August 29, 2020. I can join you immediately after that.

16. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Apart from working as a doorman, I am highly interested in valet work, which is where I am headed hopefully within the next 5 years.
