It goes without saying that a cover letter should never bore the reader who quite literally goes through dozens of cover letters. That probably means, each cover letter gets no more than a couple of seconds.
Therefore, you should concentrate on the most relevant information. If the reader is engaged, he will definitely see the attached resume.
The following example shows how a cover letter for the position of pipe welder can be written in an effective manner.

Dear Ms. Hudson:
As an energetic and self-motivated Pipe Welder with more than 5 years of hands-on experience in installing high and low pressure pipe systems,I would like to apply for a similar position at Brandt Companies.
As indicated in the enclosed resume, I have worked in industrial, commercial and residential environments and am fairly adept at installing control systems necessary for regulating heat and cooling of buildings. My area of expertise encompasses repairs, maintenance, welding, fabricating and upgrading gas transmission and distribution piping.
Having a strong background in interpreting drawings and blueprints, I successfully introduced a system that uses blueprint data as input and produces full scale drawings of pipe systems. With intensive training in measuring, cutting and threading pipes, I am able to modify the complex piping of an old building into a more current, efficient network. With deep insight into following safety standards and procedures religiously, I am well reputed when it comes to complying with company standards of top quality.
Speaking in person is perhaps a better idea, since I do believe a mere written account of a person’s work does not suffice. Let’s meet soon. Do get in touch with me at (000) 124-7451 or jonathon @ email . com. I will call you next week to set up an interview date and time.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
