Position Overview

From the title, it may seem that a warehouse packer does the packing part of the whole thing.

In actuality, a person working at this position is responsible for handling a wide variety of picking, packing, and shipping duties, which are extremely important to handling outgoing shipments.

The work of a warehouse packer is to pick orders from storage areas and to ensure that it is adequately packed, ready for shipment purposes.

Position Requirements

A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is usually sufficient to work as a warehouse packer. If you have had any prior experience in a warehouse capacity, you will be considered a good choice to hire.

In addition to performing basic picking and packing work, you will be required to handle a lot of activities, such as labeling picked orders, physically moving them to the delivery pallet, and ensuring that all the necessary paperwork is present.

As far as skills go, a warehouse packer needs to be knowledgeable about the different systems used in warehouses, to pick and pack orders. Overseeing product inventory, and communicating low stock situations to managers or supervisors is also the work of a warehouse packer.

Also, working at this position means that you will need to be on your toes at all times, ensuring that the right type and quantity of items are picked and packed.

• Look through work orders to determine the type and quantity of items to be picked.

• Check inventory systems to assess the availability of required items, and communicate statuses to warehouse supervisors.

• Check storage areas to locate needed items, and pick them up by hand, or using the forklift, for heavier elements.

• Pick items according to work order sheets, and compare them for the right information.

• Transport picked items to the packaging area, and check them for conformity of quality, and label information.

• Ascertain that additional information is properly labeled on the picked items, including batch and items numbers, and expiry dates where applicable.

• Transport packed and tagged items to the delivery pallet, and assist loaders in placing them on awaiting trucks.

• Ascertain that the right paperwork is developed, and sent with all outgoing shipments.

• Provide supervisors with information of any low stock situations that might occur within assigned areas.

• Oversee the general cleanliness and maintenance of the warehouse area, specifically assigned units.
