A truck driver helper assists truck drivers across many work duties. He or she often helps truck drivers in making the vehicle ready for long or short hauls, and also aids in loading and unloading cargo to and from trucks. The work is hard, as it requires a lot of physical stamina, but can be fun for people who enjoy working on the roads.

To be considered eligible to work as a truck driver helper, it is best if you possess a high school diploma or a GED equivalent, although, formal education is not a requirement. Often, you will be expected to assist truck drivers on their hauls, which means that you will need to go with them on their trips, providing assistance and navigational help as and when required.

This means that you will need to be well-versed in using the GPS system, and standard maps, to draw out short and safe routes to destinations. Since you will be required to handle much in terms of physical work, you will need to be physically dexterous and strong. As a truck driver helper, you may work in different capacities such as delivery, and trash removal, which means that you have to be well-versed in all.

• Look through work orders to determine which truck and truck driver has been assigned.

• Confer with truck drivers to decide on their specific needs for assistance, depending on hauls or deliveries.

• Assist truck drivers in performing regular and preventative maintenance on trucks, before the beginning of each day.

• Load items onto trucks, and ensure that they are properly stacked, and securely set within the vehicle.

• Ascertain that each piece that has been loaded onto the truck is correct in number, and in accordance with specified protocols.

• Establish that all paperwork is present with each item, and document it according to established protocols.

• Assist the driver in mapping short and safe routes on the truck’s navigational system, or through standard maps.

• Provide navigational assistance to truck drivers, ensuring that alternate routes are mapped in cases of traffic jams.

• Unload items from the truck and deliver them to the right recipients, ensuring that signatures on receipts are obtained.

• Create and maintain effective communication with dispatch units, and other officials, to inform them of statuses of deliveries.
